Beginner’s Guide to Motorcycling: Start Without Regrets

Every rider remembers their first time: that moment you twist the throttle, feel the bike rumble beneath you, and take off when the light turns green. That feeling is addictive – and often the reason motorcycling becomes a lifelong passion. But before you experience that ultimate freedom, there are a few steps (and pitfalls) every beginner should know.

Why ride a motorcycle?
Motorcycling is more than transportation. It’s freedom, adventure, and pure experience in one. You feel the wind, smell the asphalt after rain, and take corners in a way no other vehicle can. There’s also the motorcycle community – a tight-knit group of like-minded riders who greet each other on the road and often lend a hand when needed.
And let’s be honest: traffic jams are far less frustrating when you can simply ride through them.

Step 1 – Get your motorcycle licence

In Belgium and the Netherlands, there are several licence categories (A1, A2, A) depending on age, engine power, and experience.
Expect to spend €1,200 to €1,500 on lessons and exams.

Tips:

  • Take a trial lesson first to see if the school and instructor are a good fit.

  • Already know how to ride a manual (car or moped)? You may need fewer lessons.

  • Schedule lessons close together to speed up learning.

Loud doesn’t mean fast (or better)

What you really need to know about exhausts and sound

At KGL Racing, we see them often: bikes with aftermarket exhausts so loud they scare birds out of the trees. And honestly? We kind of get it. That raw roar of an open pipe makes you feel faster, more powerful, more badass. But in reality… it’s mostly psychological.

“Loud pipes save lives”? Not quite.

It’s one of those motorcycle myths that’s been around forever: the louder your bike, the safer you are. People will hear you coming, right? Unfortunately, that’s not how it works. At speeds above 80 or 90 km/h, you can barely hear your own exhaust. Let alone a driver with closed windows and the music cranked to eleven.

So who does hear you? The people on the terrace you just blasted past. And they’re not impressed—they’re annoyed. You think you’re making a statement. Spoiler: you’re not. At that moment, you come across as more of a nuisance than a passionate rider. And it reflects badly on all bikers.

What may have seemed cool or “part of the scene” back in the day is now out of step with the times. Traffic is heavier, environmental standards are stricter, and tolerance for noise pollution is wearing thin. That’s why more and more cities are installing sound-activated traffic cameras—measuring decibels, not speed. And handing out hefty fines if you twist the throttle a bit too eagerly in built-up areas.

Time to dial things down – literally and figuratively.

Every bike has its own voice

Exhaust sound is more than just noise. It’s your bike’s voice – shaped by displacement, compression, RPMs and, yes, your right hand. An old Honda 750 with open Devil pipes? Sounds like distant thunder. A Triumph Trident with Megatons? Like a chainsaw chasing seals. And a humble Harley flathead? Like a dieting bumblebee with a grudge.

In short: character, not decibels. At KGL Racing, we get that every motorcycle is unique and deserves a voice that matches. We’re here to help you find the perfect balance between standout sound and neighbor-friendly vibes.

The Yamaha Vmax 1200 of KGL Racing – From European Adventurer to Unmistakable Mascot

There are bikes you hear, bikes you see… and then there’s the Yamaha Vmax 1200 of KGL Racing: a machine you feel deep in your chest. Born in 1997 in a striking colour scheme, it began its life as a pure mile-eater. Its playground? The whole of Europe – from the fjords of Norway to the sunny coast of Croatia, and everything in between.

Born in 1997

From day one, it had a distinctive detail: the NOS bottle. Not for extra horsepower, but as a clever solution to the Vmax’s small fuel tank. The additional 3 litres meant there was no need to push it to the next petrol station. It even proved it could get back on the road the old-fashioned way after running dry – Continue reading “The Yamaha Vmax 1200 of KGL Racing – From European Adventurer to Unmistakable Mascot”
