Since January 1, 2023, a technical inspection for motorcycles has been in effect in Belgium. This raises many questions among motorcyclists: For which motorcycles is this inspection mandatory? Where can you go? And how do you ensure your motorcycle passes without issues? In this blog, we provide a complete overview.
When is the inspection mandatory?
The motorcycle inspection in Belgium is not periodic but is required in the following cases:
- When selling: Before a motorcycle is registered under a new owner’s name, it must first pass an inspection. The certificate is valid for two months.
- After an accident: If the motorcycle has sustained damage to essential components such as the chassis, suspension, or brakes, an inspection is required to verify the repairs.
Which motorcycles are subject to inspection?
The inspection is mandatory for:
- Motorcycles, three-wheelers, and four-wheelers with an internal combustion engine over 125 cc.
- Electric or hybrid motorcycles with a power output above 11 kW and a top speed exceeding 45 km/h.
Lighter motorcycles are currently exempt from this requirement.
Where can you go for a motorcycle inspection?
The inspection can only be performed at specific centers equipped for motorcycles. Some locations in Flanders include:
- Alken
- Antwerp-Noorderlaan
- Bruges
- Geel
- Mechelen
- Roeselare
- Tienen
- Zwijnaarde
A complete list of authorized inspection centers can be found on the websites of the inspection authorities.
What is checked during the inspection?
During the inspection, various aspects of the motorcycle are examined, including:
- Brakes: Efficiency and balanced operation.
- Steering system: Checking for play and proper function.
- Lights and reflectors: Correct operation and alignment.
- Suspension: Checking for wear and defects.
- Chassis: Checking for structural damage or corrosion.
- Exhaust noise level: Compliance with noise regulations.
- Emissions: Compliance with environmental standards.
What is the cost of the inspection?
The current price for the motorcycle inspection is €55.60.
Tips to avoid pitfalls
- Check your motorcycle beforehand: Inspect brakes, lights, suspension, and tire pressure.
- Bring the correct documents: Registration certificate, conformity certificate, and previous inspection certificate if applicable.
- Be cautious with modifications: Non-original parts may lead to rejection, especially if they affect safety or environmental standards.
- Schedule your appointment in time: Avoid long waiting times by booking your inspection early.
By preparing well, you can avoid surprises and ensure that your motorcycle passes the inspection without any issues.
